The UK project to connect a solar power plant in Morocco by undersea cables to the UK grid, 3,800KM, away, involves what would appear to be a giant leap of faith by British companies Xlinks and cable maker XLCC.
But as XLCC project director Alan Mathers will explain to the IWMA conference, world demand for XLCC’s only product – 525Kv undersea high-voltage, direct-current cable – is set to shoot sky-high over the rest of the decade – making XLCC perhaps the world’s biggest supplier.
Alan will talk not only about the £18bn Morocco project and XLCC’s part in it, but also about the company’s decision to make a single, standard product in large quantities – 16,000km of it for Morocco-Devon alone - and the advantages such standardisation will bring to the company, to the solar and wind power industry, and to the market as a whole.
